A subterranean earthquake measuring 5.0 in magnitude jolted off Indonesia's eastern Central Papua province on Saturday, the country's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.
The quake struck at 12:32 p.m. Jakarta time (0532 GMT), with its epicenter located 28 km northeast of Puncak Jaya regency at a depth of 100 km.
So far, there have been no preliminary reports of damages or casualties after the earthquake, as confirmed by Caroline, a senior official from Papua's regional disaster management agency.
Indonesia, being an archipelagic nation situated on the seismically active "Pacific Ring of Fire," experiences frequent earthquakes.
In the past 24 hours, there were 978 quakes of magnitudes up to 5.5:
- 1 quake above magnitude 5
- 24 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
- 103 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4
- 267 quakes between magnitude 2 and 3
- 583 quakes below magnitude 2 that people normally don't feel.
