Israeli raid on Gaza"Safe Zone" kills 90 ,wounds more than300

WHO Chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that “many remain missing under the rubble” after Israeli forces attacked the al-Mawasi camp in southern Gaza, killing at least 90 Palestinians and wounding more than 300 people.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was not certain if senior Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif, who Israel said was the target of the attack, was killed. Still, he said the attempted assassination was beneficial to Israel.

The bombings, which drew condemnation from the United Nations and Middle Eastern countries, came as Israeli forces also attacked a ruined mosque in the Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza City, killing at least 20 people, including worshippers.

At least 38,443 people have been killed and 88,481 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7. The death toll in Israel from the Hamas-led attacks on October 7 is estimated at 1,139, and dozens of people are still held captive in Gaza.

Israel says it tried to assassinate Mohammed Deif, the leader of Hamas’s military wing, who has long topped the country’s most-wanted list.but failed .

A Hamas official says the group’s military leader, Mohammed Deif, is “fine” despite an apparent Israeli attempt to kill him in an attack.

“Commander Mohammed Deif is well and directly overseeing” military operations against Israeli forces, the unnamed Hamas official told AFP.

On Saturday, an Israeli air raid killed at least 90 Palestinians in a designated “humanitarian” zone in Gaza, the Health Ministry said. The attack was the deadliest in Gaza for weeks.

Israel said the strike attempted to kill Deif. Hamas said Israel’s claims it targeted its leaders are false and aimed at justifying the attack.

Deif was among the founders of Hamas’s military wing, the Qassam Brigades, in the 1990s and has led the force for more than 20 years. Israel has identified him and Hamas’s Gaza leader, Yahya Sinwar, as the chief architects of the October 7 attack that killed at least 1,139 people in southern Israel and triggered its war on Gaza.

Deif is believed to be paralysed after surviving multiple Israeli assassination attempts. He hasn’t been seen in public in years, and only a handful of photos of him exist online. On the morning of October 7, Hamas issued a rare voice recording of Deif announcing the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation.

Deif, like Sinwar, was born in the refugee camp of the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis in the early 1960s and is believed to have joined Hamas after its formation in the late 80s. In 1989, during the height of the first Palestinian Intifada, or uprising, Deif was arrested by Israel but later released.

Deif became the head of the Qassam Brigades in 2002 after Israel killed his predecessor. He’s thought to have helped expand Hamas’s labyrinth of tunnels that run beneath Gaza.
