In a tragic incident, at least 27 people, mostly women, were killed in a massive stampede at a religious congregation in a village of Hathras district in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the police, a stampede was triggered at a 'satsang' in Pulrai village, in which 27 people, including 23 women, lost their lives.

"Twenty-seven bodies have arrived in Etah hospital. Among those killed are 23 women, three children and a man," Senior Superintendent of Police, Etah, Rajesh Kumar Singh told reporters.

The senior officer said the stampede was apparently triggered due to overcrowding as a large number of people had gathered there to attend the 'satsang' event.

Visuals shared on social media showed tragic scenes of dozens of people, mostly women, lying motionless on the ground and some being loaded onto the back of pickup trucks and taken to hospitals.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede and instructed officials to reach the accident site to carry out relief measures. At least 27 people, mostly women, have been killed in northern India in a stampede at a religious gathering, officials have said.

The incident took place at a satsang (a Hindu religious event) in Hathras district in Uttar Pradesh state, a senior police official said.

The victims include 23 women and three children, he said, adding that the bodies were yet to be identified.

It's not clear yet what led to the stampede.

A video shared by news agency PTI showed the wounded being brought to a hospital for treatment.
