President Alvi appoints Justice Qazi Faez Isa as next CJP, take oath in Sept


President Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday appointed Justice Qazi Faez Isa as the next chief justice of Pakistan (CJP).

Justice Isa’s appointment will be effective from September 17, 2023, with the retirement of the incumbent CJP Umar Ata Bandial.

Justice Bandial will reach the age of retirement on September 16, 2023, under Article 179 of the Constitution which states that a judge of the Supreme Court shall hold office until he attains the age of 65 years unless he sooner resigns or is removed from office.

President Alvi appointed Justice Isa under Article 175(a)(3) of the Constitution, which maintains that the president shall appoint the most senior Judge of the Supreme Court as the CJP.

Justice Isa will be sworn into his office by the president on September 17.

The senior puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan has said that on becoming the chief justice later this year, he would endeavour to make the system of formation of benches and fixation of cases transparent.

Justice Isa has been a judge for the apex court since September 5, 2014. Previously he served as the chief justice of the Balochistan High Court from 2009 to 2014.
