MCCI hailed the ordinance against hoarding and smuggling

MULTAN, April 18th: President of Multan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) Sheikh Fazal Elahi hailed the promulgation of ordinance against hoarding and smuggling describing it a good step.In a statement Sheikh Fazal Elahi said that hoarding of food is harmful to the masses as well as the state .He said, “However, we are of the view that measures must be taken to ensure that this ordinance is not misused by the concerned authorities”, adding that sugar, flour, salt, pulses industries would have to maintain stocks at factories, and wholesale godowns for smooth business operation and supply chain. He said that being the premier business body of the South Punjab, MCCI has always taken a strict stance against the hoarding practices as that result in unnecessary shortages, especially of essential commodities and sudden price hikes in country.Sheikh Fazal Elahi said that there is vast difference between a hoarder and a trader because hoarders are considered as anti-social elements and Traders are service provider/supplier.He suggested that Government should do classification of wholesalers and retailers in three categories of A.B.C keeping in view their sale.If someone sells 500 bags of flour daily then he must be authorised to keep this consignment in stock.MCCI President said that hoarders are open enemies of the nation and the country. They deserve no mercy. He said that hoarders are less than one percent but they create troubles for 99 percent people including retailers. He said that the government ought to have described the definition of hoarding first before laws to curb it were enforced. “The government should explain how much stock of an item a shopkeeper can have,” he said, adding that the same should be determined for storage houses run by wholesalers.Sheikh said that if the government is serious about the matter of hoarding during the coronavirus crisis, then it should take the traders on board to make a new strategy.
