Social media job scams in UAE: Warning issued as fake ads promise high salaries

The Abu Dhabi Police have issued a warning about rising online scams, with fraudsters using deceptive tactics to lure victims with false promises of financial gain.

These criminals employ increasingly sophisticated methods to exploit unsuspecting individuals.

Major General Mohammed Suhail Al Rashidi, Director of the Criminal Security Sector, reaffirmed Abu Dhabi Police’s ongoing commitment to expanding law enforcement services, enhancing crime prevention initiatives, and raising public awareness to safeguard national security and assets. This initiative aligns with the strategic focus on reinforcing safety and preventing crime.

Major General Al Rashidi pointed to specific examples of fraud, including fake trading platforms. Scammers often use professional-looking advertisements to create a sense of legitimacy, initially showing fake profits to encourage further investments. However, when victims attempt to withdraw their money, they are unable to access their funds

He also highlighted the growing threat posed by fraudulent websites impersonating well-known companies, such as insurance providers, restaurants, and retailers. These sites often offer enticing deals in exchange for payments, only for scammers to steal funds from victims’ accounts once a transaction is made using credit cards.

Abu Dhabi Police also urged the public to be cautious, especially during official events or celebrations, when fraudsters may create fake job recruitment pages or social media programs, charging applicants for non-existent positions. Victims typically realise they have been scammed only after making payments.

The police also advise internet and smartphone users to protect their personal information to avoid falling victim to phone scams, blackmail, or other forms of cyber fraud.

Victims of fraud are encouraged to report incidents to the nearest police station or use the Abu Dhabi Police smart application’s “Police Station in Your Phone” service.

In case of suspicious or fraudulent activity, individuals should immediately contact hotline 8002626, text 2828, or email aman@adpolice.gov.ae to assist in combating fraud and protecting the community.

Meanwhile, the UAE Cybersecurity Council has warned of a significant rise in cyberattacks aimed at stealing personal information through advanced techniques. The council stressed the importance of individuals taking preventive measures to safeguard their personal data.

Recommended security steps include using unique, complex passwords, verifying the authenticity of emails and links, and enabling multifactor authentication (MFA) on all devices and accounts.

The council recommended regular software updates, securing devices with biometric authentication (such as Face ID or fingerprint recognition), using strong passwords, managing app permissions, securing cloud backups, disabling unnecessary location tracking, and activating anti-theft features.
