Aaj Tak district reporter Santosh Kumar Toppo's entire family, including his parents and brother, was brutally killed in a violent attack over a property dispute in Chhattisgarh's Surajpur on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred around 1 pm on a disputed piece of land in the Jagannathpur area.
According to reports, Santosh’s parents, Maghe Toppo (57) and Basanti Toppo (55), along with his brother, Naresh Toppo (30), had gone to the site to begin farming. The land was at the centre of an ongoing family dispute.
While they were at the site, six-seven members of his extended family arrived at the site. A verbal argument escalated into violence, with the attackers using axes and sticks.
Basanti and Naresh died on the spot from severe head injuries. Maghe, who was critically injured, was taken to Ambikapur Medical College but died during treatment.
Santosh's brother Umesh Toppo managed to escape the attack and informed the villagers. Police were called to the scene, and an investigation is underway. The accused fled after the incident, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend them.
Preliminary reports suggest the disputed land had been farmed by the attackers before the court ruled in favour of Santosh's family. Tensions over the property had been simmering for months, ultimately leading to the violent confrontation
Santosh Kumar Toppo was not present during the attack but lost three members of his family in the incident. Police teams from Khargawa and Pratappur are investigating the case.
