According to reports, at least a 3ft portion of the bridge collapsed into the river Ganga below. The bridge had also suffered some damage back in April due to a storm.

The middle portion of the bridge was being constructed on the river Ganges between Khagaria, Aguwani and Sultanganj. A portion of the bridge had collapsed two years ago as well.

The Bhartiya Janata Party came down heavily on Bihar CM Nitish Kumar over the bridge collapse. BJP leader Amit Malviya asked if Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav would resign from the posts of CM and Deputy CM, respectively.

"In 2015, Nitish Kumar inaugurated this bridge, which was to be completed by 2020. This bridge has fallen for the second time. Will Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav resign immediately, taking cognizance of this incident? By doing this, both the uncle and nephew can set an example in front of the country," he said in a tweet.

Reacting to the bridge collapse, Bihar LoP Vijay Kumar Sinha slammed the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government. He told ANI, "There's a tradition of seeking commissions. It is a consequence of his mentality of political instability that there's administrative anarchy and corruption. The system is collapsing but they are talking about opposition unity."

Earlier in December 2022, a portion of the bridge built across Burhi Gandak river in Bihar's Begusarai, had collapsed. The bridge had reportedly developed cracks and pillars 2 and 3 of the bridge had taken a fall.

A month before that, in November, a labourer died and another was injured when an under-construction bridge in CM Nitish Kumar's Nalanda district collapsed. Under-construction bridges also collapsed in Kishanganj and Saharsa districts before inauguration.
