Blasphemy charges on inmate erupt protests in Abbottabad


A prisoner in Abbottabad jail, on Saturday was attacked by fellow prisoners on being accused for damaging Holy Quran.

As per stated in the FIR the accused was jailed in 2019 on charges of blasphemy. It highlighted that the registered prisoner of City Police Station, was jailed due to the wrong conduct of damaging Holy Quran. 

According to the jail officials, the prisoner out of mental instability committed the crime.

Moreover, his inmate tried to strangle him whereas the police constable reaching at the right moment shifted the prisoner to the separate cell of the jail.

The business was halted and markets were shuttered-down, people of the city marched in the form of mob to the jail where inmate was attacked by the prisoners.

The law enforcement agencies were allocated at numerous spots of the city.

Koral police have booked five unknown men under section 295-B of Pakistan Penal Code on Thursday following a massive protest demonstration by residents that also caused massive traffic jam in capital, according to sources. However, no arrest was made so far, they said.

According to sources, tens of hundreds of residents of Sadiqabad, Khanna Road, Service Road and Iqbal Town gathered at Islamabad Expressway at Khanna Bridge and staged a massive protest demonstration against police failure in registration of a case against five men found involved in filling sacks with pages of Quran. They blocked road from both sides triggering a gigantic traffic jam on all roads including Old Airport Road, Koral Chowk, Khanna East and West, Iqbal Town, Soan, Faizabad, Murree Road, IJP Road, and Old Murree Road causing miseries to the commuters.

Sensing the sensitivity of issue, all the top bosses of Islamabad police rushed to scene and negotiated with the protestors who refused to open the road for traffic without getting FIR filed against accused. Later, Koral police lodged a case against five men and started investigation.

According to contents of FIR, a driver Suhail Nasir informed Koral police that he was travelling in a car on Service Road when he spotted five men while loading sacks filled with Quran pages in two rickshaws. 

He added that he inquired about the act from the men who replied they found the pages on Green Belt and were going to bury them somewhere. Later, the five men disappeared from scene. 

He said he also alerted police about the incident. The locals got infuriated and blocked the road by staging protest, he mentioned in the FIR. Police lodged case against five men and started investigation.

Meanwhile, SSP Traffic Islamabad Farrukh Rashid also issued a traffic advisory in order to guide the road users. He said diversions were placed for traffic on Islamabad Expressway. 

Despite of the road advisory, citizens faced immense traffic jam. “I left my house for workplace in Blue Area at 8am but I am stuck in traffic jam for last two hours,” said Hifza Pervez.
