Barrett was a semi-retired middle school math teacher and a married father-of-four.
One of his daughters, Jenn, remembered him in an emotional blog post.
'I can’t think about a wedding day without my dad to walk me down the aisle. I can’t think about grandkids that will never know their grandfather. I can’t think about Christmas or holidays that will be so much harder without my dad,' she wrote.
Their church, First Baptist New Braunfels, told DailyMail.com on Wednesday that they were among elderly members who did not want to drive home so opted for the ride.
Others, who were not harmed, drove back to New Braunfels in their own cars.
The church was yet to receive specific details of the crash and its victims on Wednesday night.
'We're still waiting to hear an official statement from authorities. We're just grateful for everyone's support right now,' a church member said.
Earlier, it announced the horrifying news on Facebook.
'At approximately 12.30pm this afternoon, a group of our senior adults were returning home from a three-day retreat for singers 55 years and older at Alto Frio Baptist Encampment when their vehicle was involved in a head-on collision.
'We have heard that there have been fatalities, but we have not received any official details from the local authorities.
'We are ministering to family members to help them deal with this tragedy. Counselors will be on hand at the church tomorrow. If you're a Christian, you can pray for those who lost their loved ones and for the church family.'
The church canceled all its days events earlier in the day after being notified of the crash.
