"Saraiki Ajrak (Lukar)" day was celebrated by the Saraiki Nationalist parties here on Monday to highlight the Saraiki Culture and their demand for creation of a separate province for more than 60 million people of this zone.
Various Nationalist parties and civil society organisations set aside their differences on Monday and took out rallies on Abdali road of the ancient city of Multan to mark the Saraiki Ajrak(Lukar)Day', highlighting the culture of the province in an impressive show of solidarity in their ranks. The organisations also held separate programmes to highlight the Saraiki's culture, sanctity of the traditional Saraiki Lukar. Participants of these programmes wore shalwar-kameez with Ajraks slung over their shoulders.
People living in South Punjab showed unique and complete solidarity on Saraiki Ajrak (Lukar) Day in a mammoth and befitting manner. The nationalists who were constantly harping on the theme of Jeaye Saraiki and seculars like PPP, PTI and ANP stood on one platform to observe a day
The Saraiki nation, which also includes people from all walks of life living in Saraiki Waseb, may have achieved their purpose without realising that how in the longer term the day will be remembered. Saraiki Nationalist Leaders Rana Faraz Noon Chairman of Saraiki Democratic Party, Begum Nakhba Taj Langah President of Pakistan Saraiki Party, Khawaja Ghulam Fareed Koreja Chairman of Saraiki Awami Ittehad,Saraiki Intellectual Zahoor Dhareeja, Dr.Mazhar Kaat, Mansoor Karim Siyal, Mumtaz Khan Dahar, Malik Javed Channer Advocate, Syed Mehdi-ul-Hassan Shah, People's Saraiki Party Chief Malik Zul Naurain Bhutta,Saraiki National Party's M.A Bhutta, Saraiki National Council chief Muzaffar Khan Magsi and Abida Bukhari, Ujala Langah,Matloob Bukhari, M Saleem Raja of other nationalists parties accused of Punjab Government usurping their rights and developing a sense of deprivations. They said that they wanted to create an atmosphere of bonhomie and camaraderie among those living in the geographical boundaries of the Saraiki province. The nationalists, however, exploited the day to enhance their agenda. They organised rallies and held meetings in Multan Press Club.
The message has particularly reached Lahore, the Province of power that any faux pas could be a disastrous move.By organizing Saraiki Ajrak Day, they had let the Genie of culture out of the bottle. In united Pakistan cultures of different nationalities and provinces had played a positive role. The loud noises made for creation of Saraiki province consisting of 23 district of Punjab & NWFP and upholding a particular culture could also shake the foundations of press club building.Culture can play uniting as well as a devising role.
March 6 could be a watershed in the political history of Punjab. The forces which are already harping on the theme of denial of Saraiki Identity over the years may try to exploit the popular feelings and this could sow the seed for further disenchantment among the less educated and highly emotionally charged masses to more vigorously launch a movement to grab both power and pelf.
Suggestion that the day should be observed annually may prompt people of other cultures in the country to observe their own culture day which may further exacerbate the already politically charged atmosphere in the country.
