(IHCBA Election) It was a setback for the group who used to win the Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) elections for the last a few years as a ‘newcomer’ won the presidential seat after a tough competition and with a difference of only seven votes on Saturday. Advocate Arif Chaudhry won the seat by scoring 525 votes against 518 of Sheikh Khizer Rashid.
Mr Chaudhry remained the vice chairman of the Punjab Bar Council in Lahore over a decade ago. He moved to Islamabad three years ago.
Initially, Mr Chaudhry was a supporter of the then ‘ruling’ group of lawyers.
In January 2014, Mr Chaudhry challenged scores of appointments made in the Islamabad High Court (IHC). He came to the spotlight after the Supreme Court on September 26 last year declared the recruitments, including the hiring of a brother of the IHC Chief Justice Mohammad Anwar Khan Kasi, as illegal.
His competitor Sheikh Khizer Rashid is comparatively a young lawyer. Besides some notable local lawyers, several former presidents of the IHCBA and the district bar association of Islamabad were canvassing for him. In addition, the incumbent members of the Islamabad Bar Council were also openly supporting and campaigning for Mr Rashid.
For the first time since the establishment of the IHBA in 2011, the lawyers witnessed a tough competition. The local group had managed an easy victory against their opponents since 2012.
A senior lawyer told that since the local group could not delivered, the lawyers, especially the young ones, wanted an alternative.
Former judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC) and a senior local lawyer, Raja Shafqat Khan Abbasi, admitted that their group could not deliver.
In the election, Arbab Abbasi became the secretary IHCBA by bagging 550 votes against 485 of Abdul Raffeh.
Asif Tamboli was elected as the joint secretary with 528 votes while his rival Sajid Mashwani secured 507 votes.
In Rawalpindi, Zafar Mehmood Mughal became the president of the Lahore High Court Bar Association, Rawalpindi bench. He secured 965 votes while Ghulam Mustafa Kandwal took 571, Sarkar Abbas 471 and Ghufran Khurshid Imtiazi eight votes.
For the secretary LHCBA, Malik Shah Nawaz Noon with 1,228 votes defeated Sardar Ghazanfer Khan (763 votes).
Malik Sajjad Haider Awan was elected as the senior vice president with 1,513 votes while Bilal Mughat with 1,056 votes was elected as the joint secretary.
Ch Zulifqar Ali was announced successful for President LHCBA. He secured 3,365 votes, beating his rival Muhammad Ramzan Sohal ofAasima Jehangir group who secured 2,909 votes.
Rashid Lodhi was declared the winner for Vice President LHCBA with 4,419 votes. His rival, Ch Saleem, secured 3,276 votes.
Amir Saeed Raan secured the post of Secretary LHCBA with 2,396 votes. His closest rival, Hassan Iqbal Warraich received 1,881 votes.
