At least 100 people have been injured after a Long Island Rail Road train derailed at Brooklyn's Atlantic Terminal on Wednesday.
It's not yet clear what caused the train to jump its tracks at around 8.20am.
Photographs showed smoke billowing from the train which plowed through a bumper on the platform, shattering a glass door.
Several passengers remained slumped on the floor as they were treated by paramedics shortly before 9am.
Others told how they were standing at the doors ready to disembark when the train suddenly came to a 'screeching' crash.
The train suddenly slammed. We were standing and waiting to get off.
'One of the doors shattered and we all fell on top of each other,' one woman, who was in the front car, told The New York Post.
Another, who watched the chaos unfold from across the platform, said: 'There was a screeching and the station quickly filled with dust and smoke.'
The injured were stretchered away from the scene as crowds gathered on platforms.
Responders were still evacuating passengers from the train 30 minutes after the crash.
Governor Andrew Cuomo addressed the media at around 10am, explaining how the train pushed past the bumper where it was meant to stop.
'From the appearance of the accident, the train came in and hit the so-called bumping block and went by it for a few feet. 'Our first concern is the people who were on the train. There were a number of minor injuries. We believe the worst injury at this time is a broken leg.
'A broken leg is not good but we've been through situations where we've had worse,' he said.
Most of those injured had been standing at the doors waiting to disembark the train when it crashed suddenly, causing them to fall.
'Basically what happened was they were standing, waiting to get off the train, the train has a sudden stop and they were not prepared for the sudden stop so they got knocked around, banged around; they hurt an arm or a leg.
'Most of the injured are people who just walked off and left the train. That's why the number (of those hurt) is hard to pin point.'
Later he tweeted: 'The train was supposed to stop at a bumper and didn't, but glad to report there were no deaths; the most serious injury was a broken leg.'
An investigation into why the train did not stop is underway.
There was no immediate explanation from Long Island Rail Road other than its Twitter announcements that several other services had been disrupted.
'Anticipate possible delays into and out of Atlantic Terminal this morning due to an incident at the terminal.'
The Fire Department of New York confirmed all of the passengers' injuries were non life threatening.
'76 non life-threatening injuries reported at scene of LIRR train derailment, Atlantic Terminal Brooklyn,' it said.Several roads surrounding the terminal were closed as fire trucks and ambulances flocked to help the injured.
NYPD warned of delays as a result of the incident.
'Expect traffic delays in the area of the Brooklyn Atlantic Terminal due to a LIRR train derailment.
'More info to follow when available,' it said.
Aerial photographs showed traffic chaos around the terminal immediately after the crash.
Several fire trucks were lined up outside as crowds of emergency workers in fluorescent vests worked immediately outside.
It is the second LIRR crash since October when 29 people were injured in an evening collision with a work train.
Earlier in the year, a New Jersey transit commuter train plowed into Hoboken station at rush hour.
A young mother was killed in the crash.
