Seven police officials were killed in two separate attacks in Orangi Town Thursday afternoon, South Punjab News reported.
Unknown gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on a police vehicle, which was deployed for the security of polio vaccination officials, DawnNews reported. All four policemen on board the vehicle died on the spot, police sources said.
Immediately after attacking the vehicle, the gunmen sped away and opened fire on three other policemen, who were also on duty in the area, eye witnesses said. All three succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital, police sources added.
There are no reports of injuries or deaths of polio workers so far.
The anti-polio campaign in the area was suspended immediately and law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area.
The campaign to eliminate polio in Pakistan has been fraught with risk, with militants attacking health teams they accused of being spies.
A polio worker was shot and wounded in February and in January a suicide bomber killed 15 people outside a polio eradication centre in Quetta.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only countries in the world which have been transferring the polio virus to each other.
